The What Ifs Every Founder Faces

In the early days of running my business, I learned very quickly that growth isn’t just about winning clients, delivering great work, or pushing hard every day.  It’s also about surviving the moments you never saw coming.   the What Ifs.

And I’ll be honest:  in those early years, we weren’t ready.

We were busy, ambitious, and focused on the next opportunity.  But when a What If hit and they did, it was generally a scramble.  A key client paused work.  A key team member resigned.  A supplier failed us at the worst possible moment.  A short-term capacity issue or lack of work to fill the diaries,  Illness, accidents, world events… they all arrived, and each one exposed a gap we hadn’t planned for.

There was no playbook. Just reaction, stress, and firefighting.

Over time, we realised something had to change.  We started to risk‑assess the business properly,  not as a tick‑box exercise, but as a strategic discipline.  We mapped out every What If we could think of:

  • Loss of a major client
  • Capacity issue
  • Resignation of a key member of staff
  • Long‑term sickness or accident
  • Critical supplier failure
  • Technology outage or data loss
  • Security breach
  • Cash flow shock
  • Lender pressure
  • Regulatory changes
  • Natural disaster or world event: (COVID) we did not fully have a plan for that but navigated through and created some great opportunities with the team.

Then we asked one simple question for each:  What would we do if this happened tomorrow?

That shift changed everything.

We built prevention into our operations, stronger processes, better documentation, cross‑training, diversified suppliers, clearer financial controls, and more robust client management.  Prevention became the goal.

But we also built response plans.  So when a What If did occur and they still did we weren’t thrown into panic.  We already knew the first steps, who was responsible, what the communication would be, and how we’d protect the business.

The result wasn’t just resilience.  It was confidence.  The kind of confidence that lets you grow without fear of the unknown.

At Matvelo, this is exactly what we help founder‑led businesses build:  clarity, structure, and operational resilience so the What Ifs don’t become business‑stopping events.

If you haven’t risk‑assessed your business recently, now is the time.  The What Ifs are only dangerous when you haven’t planned for them.
